Activity along Lakeway and Downtown, here’s what went down.

Wednesday, January 28, 20265 min read

Good morning, Bellingham!

Yesterday felt like a tale of two cities. While many neighborhoods remained quiet, the business hubs of Puget and Downtown were buzzing with activity. We saw a heavy concentration of calls centered around the 800 block of Lakeway Drive and the Meridian retail corridor. From a serious internet crimes investigation to shots fired and trespassing notices downtown, BPD kept moving.

Bellingham police activity heatmap showing 30 incidents on January 28, 2026

Fredmeyer’s was the city's primary hotspot yesterday, recording six separate incidents ranging from shoplifting and burglary to warrant arrests. This single block accounted for over 15 percent of the day's total calls. Meanwhile, the Sehome neighborhood saw a cluster of behavioral health and domestic dispute calls on Otis Street late in the evening. Downtown also saw eight total incidents, mostly involving public order and trespassing issues.

The most concerning were a probable cause arrest for internet crimes against children; and two reports of shots fired, one in the morning on Idaho Street and another in the afternoon on Gilbert Drive. While these incidents are concerning, the vast majority of yesterday's police work, over 84 percent, involved non-violent offenses like property crimes and public order maintenance.

Malicious activity led the charge yesterday with 15 incidents, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total volume. This category was largely defined by a string of 'trouble with a person' calls and trespassing notices, particularly in the Downtown core and along Northwest Avenue. These are not just numbers, they represent the ongoing friction in our public spaces that business owners and residents navigate daily. Officers issued several five year trespass notices to individuals causing disruptions at local businesses.

Theft followed as the second most frequent category with eight reported incidents, including two significant burglaries, one at the Bellis Fair Mall and another at Fredmeyer’s. Furthermore, vehicle prowls and lost property reports scattered throughout the city.

Peak

The day hit its stride just as the city was settling into the work day and opening up shop.

The 11:00 AM hour proved to be the busiest window with five incidents occurring in sixty minutes. This late morning peak included a mix of sitting and lying violations downtown, a burglary near the mall, and a fight reported out on Aldrich Road. Activity remained steady through the afternoon, with another significant cluster of four calls during the 3:00 PM hour, largely focused on the Puget and Downtown areas. The evening stayed relatively active as well, with another four calls coming in during the 10:00 PM hour.

Intel Briefs

Fredmeyer Activity

With six incidents in the 800 block of Lakeway Drive alone, shoppers and employees should remain vigilant. Keep your vehicles locked and valuables out of sight even for quick errands, as retail areas are currently seeing higher rates of property crime and warrant activity.

Commercial Burglary Prevention

The burglaries on Bellis Fair Parkway and Lakeway Drive highlight the need for communication. As residents, thoroughly documenting and communicating the incidents we encounter is what helps BPD better serve us.

‘What was that boom?’

The two separate reports of shots yesterday answers one of Bellingham’s most popular questions… ‘What was that boom?’. Do not investigate yourself, let officers secure the area and determine the source of the sound.
